Meet Regulo Rodriguez - Blending Operator at Kar’s
Can you tell us about your Hispanic or Latino heritage?I was born in Texas but moved to Tabasco, Mexico when I was 2 years old. When I was 11, I moved to Mexico City to live with my aunt and uncle so I could go to school. I was 20 when I moved to California for work. I eventually ended up in Michigan, where I’ve been since 1975.
Do you have a favorite tradition from your heritage?Christmas is a big deal in Mexico City. We start the celebrations on December 16th and it doesn’t end until the end of December. During that time, there would always be a party with pinatas at someone’s house. The next day, the party would continue at a different house!
What is your favorite traditional food? I love fried beans and rice. I also like to make pork chops with tomatoes, hot peppers, and onions. I never even knew about Nachos until I moved to the US and worked in a Mexican Restaurant.
How would you explain to someone what it means to be Hispanic or Mexican? We are a very tight community. We grow up seeing each other like family. It’s almost part of our tradition to keep seeing each other. Even if you have disagreements, you’re still family.
